Minister Day Promotes Canadian Business in Ecuador - August 24, 2009
The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, opened doors for Canadian business during his visit to Quito, Ecuador, a vibrant, emerging market. While in Ecuador, the Minister met with high-ranking Ecuadorian officials, to explore ways Canada and Ecuador can work more closely and efficiently together to resist protectionism and ways to further improve the investment climate for Canadian companies in Ecuador, namely in key sectors such as infrastructure and mining. The Minister also delivered a speech to the Chamber of Commerce Canada-Ecuador, in which he talked about his tour of the New Quito International Airport and the Canadian Commercial Corporation's (CCC) involvement in that project. "This involvement shows Canada's ability to meet important infrastructure needs for all Ecuadorians," said the Minister. "This is also a good example of how CCC continues to support job creation back home in Canada, while simultaneously contributing to the Ecuadorean economy through sourcing of local products and technologies."

PRESS RELEASE - Canadian Commercial Corporation Visits The New Quito International Airport To Participate In Event "¡Socios Con Futuro!"
Quito, July 6, 2009 - The Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC), the Government of Canada's international contracting and procurement agency and prime contractor for the construction of the New Quito International Airport (NQIA), visited today the new airport construction site as part of their ongoing monitoring of the project and to participate in the event "¡Socios con futuro!" organized by the Canadian Embassy, CCC, the Ecuadorian- Canadian Chamber of Commerce and partners involved in the construction and concession of the new airport.
Today, from 10:00 to 14:00, the "¡Socios con futuro!" event brought together representatives of the central government, provincial and municipal authorities, diplomatic corps, Canadian investors in the country, Ecuadorian investors, media and opinion leaders. They had the opportunity to celebrate Canada Day, Canada's national holiday, with a reception that included an artistic presentation by the Orchestra of Andean Instruments and by various acrobatic dancers at the largest infrastructure project currently underway in the country.
The event took place inside the NQIA Passenger Terminal Building, which was open to visitors for the first time. Visitors were able to meet with open house participants that included over 35 local, international and Canadian companies presenting their involvement in Ecuador's future.
Mr. Marc Whittingham, President and CEO of the Canadian Commercial Corporation, explained to the 500 guests that "the partnership between Canada and Ecuador has grown as the Quito airport project progresses through the continued exchange of technical know-how and best-practices, Ecuador is reaping the benefits of this strong partnership." Canada's Ambassador to Ecuador, Mr. Christian Lapointe, also highlighted Canada's presence in Ecuador and presented merit awards to NQIA workers.
The phrase "¡Socios con futuro!" alludes to the partnership between Canada and Ecuador and the relationship that both countries share in terms of complimentary development objectives and shared sense of values. The NQIA project is a prime example of this partnership. More specifically, Canada's technical, administrative and CSR experience is closely aligned with Ecuadorian objectives for business best practices. Canada, with its stable economy, is well positioned to carry out many projects in Ecuador.
The Government of Canada, through CCC, remains committed to ensuring that the New Quito International Airport is built as per the terms and conditions of the agreed upon contract. The airport is expected to be operational by October 2010. When complete, the New Quito International Airport project, a landmark international venture led by Canada, will be Latin America's newest and most advanced airport.
Construction technology and techniques from the Canadian engineering and construction team of Aecon Group and its partners have been transferred to on-site workers and Ecuadorian sub-contractors and sub-trades. Ecuadorian businesses have obtained 80.67% of the contracts for the project. To date, construction of the New Quito International Airport has created 5,500 indirect jobs in Ecuador in addition to over 1,700 on-site workers. Given the increased capacity of the NQIA, we estimate that the economic activities generated will significantly improve local employment opportunities. Simply put, the New Quito International Airport promises to be an economic engine for Quito and for Ecuador.
CCC is the Government of Canada's international contracting and procurement agency, with contracts in place with governments around the world. More information about CCC is available at www.ccc.ca. More information about the NQIA project is available at www.ccc.ca/quito.
